Stoneware clay is provided. There is no limit on how much you can use and we encourage our members to experiment and then allow their less successful work to be recycled. All finished pottery is fired by our technicians in our electrical kilns. Each pot is fired twice, once to ‘bisque’ to prepare for glazing and a second time when glazing is complete. We make a charge for firing of £5 per kilo of finished pieces.
This is our recommended course for anyone new to ceramics who wants to learn the basics of throwing pots on the wheel and glazing. In six sessions, you will learn how to prepare clay, throw a range of basic shapes such as cylinders, bowls and plates on the wheel, add handles and pourers, trim pots on the wheel.
You will also be shown how to add textures, decorate with slips and underglazes, and glaze your pots.
It is also suitable for more advanced students as a follow-up or general opportunity to improve your throwing skills with plenty of support from a teacher. Once the teacher has explained and demonstrated the basic skills of the session they will be able to guide you on your area of interest.
We charge for materials when items are fired, at £5 per kg of finished pottery.
