Our Building
Zed Alley Clayhouse can be found at 1 Host Street BS1 5BU, close to Bristol’s Bus Station and Central bus stops. Located within the historic Christmas Steps Arts Quarter, we are surrounded by a vibrant creative community with many independent shops, and places to eat and drink, right on our doorstep.
Built around 200 years ago, the Clayhouse was for many years a pub for sailors docking alongside the Frome River. In the 1950s it was converted into a print works. The new workshop that was built to house the printing presses is now our members’ studio.
Accessibility: please note that we are in a listed building which has two steps up to the front door, and then two further steps up to the ground floor wheel-throwing classroom (the toilet is also on this floor). The studio and hand-building classroom are on the first floor which is accessed by stairs with a handrail, but there is no lift.

Our Founders
Damian and Ali Eley returned to her former hometown of Bristol in 2023 to set up Zed Alley Clayhouse together after 30 years living in London.
With professional backgrounds in engineering design and education respectively, they recently discovered the joys of pottery and had the idea of curating an ideal environment for others to experience the satisfaction and delight of making pottery for themselves.
Damian combines a background as a structural engineer designing buildings with a new-found passion for throwing clay on the wheel. Ali’s background is as a teacher and latterly a director of a charity specialising in primary science education.
