Technician opportunity
We are seeking applications for the role of studio technician
Start date
27 October 2026 (or as soon after as possible)
Hours
15-20 hours per week initially (to include one evening a week and one weekend per month, exact days and times to be arranged and there is flexibility)
Rate of pay
£15 per hour on a contractor basis
Benefits
full use of the studio, all equipment, clay and glazes (firing charges apply); storage space for personal belongings and work; use of the staff kitchen, toilet and shower facilities
Key duties:
- Prepare the studio and classrooms for use by members and classes
- Give support as needed to members while they are using the studio
- Recycle clay and bag for re-use
- Load and unload kilns
- Wrap, monitor and glaze students’ and members’ work as needed
- Prepare and mix glazes, slips and underglazes
- Wash down surfaces, clean equipment and mop all floors and communal areas
- Wash, dry, fold and put away towels and aprons
- Work closely with the other technicians to ensure smooth running of all systems
- Be proactive in supporting the growth of the studio, e.g. by encouraging students and members with their work, contributing to the development of new glazes
- Undertake additional duties from time to time, by mutual agreement
Skills and experience Required:
- Experience in and good understanding of key ceramic processes including clay recycling, glaze making and firing
- Good communication and time management skills
- Enjoys working as part of a team
- Punctual and reliable
- Able to be flexible with days/hours worked (including some evenings and weekends)
Desirable
- Ceramics degree or similar qualification
- First aid trained
